SOC players have a limited amount of storage and memory to work with and they playback using a TVβs native web browser or app store depending on the brand and model.
As a result they struggle to play content that features a heavy compute load from comprehensive clever/dynamic triggers, as well as struggling with large video assignments in terms of both length and quantity.
Smart TVs are designed and expected to play a mix of pre-rendered live and downloaded content for an indefinite period of time without issue, and so we often hear customers having an expectation of indefinite 4k video playback for hours on end, just like a live TV/Netfix/etc broadcast.
They also seem to be becoming more and more popular with our customers due to the low associated cost of just a TV, instead vs that same TV and a player.
We regularly hear things like, βIt will play back just fine in preview, but itβs too heavy for my TV.β
The same can, and often has been, said for PWA, SONAR, and lower end 3rd party players.
The ask is for some form of pre-rendering in order for TVs, and possibly browser based players, to have a wider range of capabilities, and therefore use case.
